Achilles Blog 23 – 16.6.14 ‘the Force’ and muscle memory

I’m guessing everyone has had enough of Father’s Day and the football already. Me, I’m whacked!! England and Lionel Messi kept me up til 2am two nights in a row.  For those that don’t know… Messi is strong contender for ‘best football player in the world’. I’d never seen him before…but I can see that he plays using ‘the force’… he’s a player who doesn’t so much look where he’s going as ‘feel’ it – looks like his goal-seeking foot has automatic measure of the pitch, the relative speed and position of other players and the goal mouth. My father was not a great fan of football… he was a boxing/wrestling man and I remember fun Saturday afternoons watching it with him… see this vid of kids with Dad (love the kid loving the beautiful fish!):

I received an email from a friend whose son-in-law had a year between snapping both achilles tendons…scary. One was a re-rupture. He has made a full recovery but will not play badminton again. It is not easy to know whether I might be over-stepping the mark… my foot seems pretty willing and able….but how much is too much? Don’t know. The wound is almost totally healed but my instep is pretty tender and my calf muscle will take some time to re-appear I think.
I quite enjoy doing my home-based workout. Feels like I’ve achieved something and I’m doing something good for my body/my leg….. and I know I’ll get payback. One thing that my pilates teacher talked about is muscle memory… the extraordinary capacity that our bodies have to ‘remember’ what to do once we’ve done something a few times…imagine how it would be if you had to physically remember every single move you make to drive a car… hmmm…maybe my amazing body uses ‘the force’ all the time…jx

About aintwegotitmade

Who am I?.......well, I'm getting to that age where I have to think about that before I answer... My name is J, I'm married, and my husband and I live in the great city of London. I started this blog as an update to family and friends when I completely ruptured my Achilles tendon a few years ago (see The first post). I am so fortunate in every possible way...and in all honesty, I'm just using this blog to remind myself... Why is it called Ain't we got it made?: this is a line from one of my favourite songs (Sing Baby Sing - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TtTgtkDLNys). Have I got it made? Well - I've got a roof over my head, running water right into my house, a fully-stocked supermarket round the corner, free and readily available healthcare; and I live with my lovely husband in a great city, in a beautiful country, where I feel safe and secure.... I rest my case. Fact or opinion: I am not an expert on anything… but I can confirm that everything in this blog is either fact or opinion. I hope to post regularly, mostly about things I find uplifting, positive, amusing, optimistic, important..or perhaps just about regular daily life...but I won't bother you too much. Thanks for stopping by... jx
