With Jay going off early to his wind-surf lesson, I was left stranded in the villa. I had been told that I should use nothing less than factor 50 on the scarred area of my ankle as it could be easily damaged and is indeed pretty sensitive to touch. I steel myself and set off for a 2km(?) limp/walk down to the bay… no Boot… not in this heat I thought.
On the way down (see pics), the Greek island landscape is quite different from home… very hilly and semi-arid, with lots of low level gorse-type vegetation interspersed with olive trees and cypresses… and a strong intermittent smell of rosemary… or is it oregano? Herbs anyway. And all the way along the road, a thin blue line of hose-pipe, carrying water either for irrigation.. or the ‘mains’ supplies for homes. I love rock… and this looks like sedimentary chalk/limestone with some igneous marble/quartz thrown in……and I have this stunning vista down to the coast to myself – no-one else walks.
I arrive at Club Vass about 45 mins later… to find that Jay has gone off to another beach (wind too blustery)…and also that my leg is perfectly pain-less and intact. My head wasn’t tho … (spent today sleeping off the effects of heat exhaustion(?)… hmmm…..mad dogs etc). No doubt I will soon find out if I should be doing bootless 2km walks 2 months after surgery…
Jay collects me at Club Vass and when we arrive back home, he opens the freezer to get out our improvised tray of ice (since there is no ice-cube tray). As Jay deliberately drops the shallow, pliable plastic tray to the ground to crack the ice, he shouts Yay!! Crystal Meth!… only…. he’s ‘Breaking Good’ solid well water……
